The Situation
There are times when uncomfortable questions come up, and you do not know where to turn.
Maybe you tried selling your house a while ago and it didn’t sell.
If you are working night and day, maybe you don’t have the time to keep everything ready for a visit from a realtor with a potential buyer.
Maybe one of your loved ones is bed-ridden and you don’t want to have strangers come to look at her room with her in it.
Maybe the bank is sending you notices to let you know you are behind in your payments, as if you didn’t know.
Maybe something major on your house like the heat, hot water or the roof has gone south, and you can’t afford to fix it.
If you are having trouble affording your home, you should know that there are paths you can take to a less stressful future.
If you are staring at your calendar because the auction date for your home is getting too close for a realtor to find you a buyer, selling quickly to an investor may be a step on your path to freedom.
Property Square Solutions is a real estate redevelopment firm that wants to help you if you want to get out of your current house quickly.
However, selling your house might not solve all your problems.
Where Will You Go?
If selling your home provides adequate funds, this might not be a tough question to answer.
Depending on the proceeds from selling your house, however, you may need to find options you never considered before.
Private Rentals
The most plentiful housing alternative to home ownership is rental housing. The monthly cost can be lower than your previous mortgage. If you sold your house to an investor, he might even help with the security deposit on your new home, or pay for your move.
Private Housing Support
If market rents are too high, you might find there are others willing to help. You might find local private philanthropies who will help. Religious charities often will step up, either for a short term to get you back on your feet, or for the long term if they can.
For general information on housing assistance you can visit the website for The Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania.
One group that may fit your needs is the Presbyterian Benevolent Society, which may subsidize rents or provide housing, especially if nursing support is necessary. Here are two related organizations for seniors: Presbyterian Inspired Life, Presbyterian Senior Living.
The Home of the Sparrow exists to assist women at risk of homelessness.
Public Support
While you may feel overwhelmed, you should know that there are government related housing programs that can help if you can qualify.
There are three general categories of public housing support: Housing Choice Vouchers; Section 8 Housing; and Public Housing.
Housing Choice will pay a part of a market rate rent to landlords to help program recipients live in private rentals that meet local community standards.
The Section 8 program will directly pay the rent for apartments that have been signed up for the program and meet certain standards of repair.
Public Housing is provided directly by states and municipalities in publicly owned buildings. The number of apartments available is too small to meet the demand in many cities and towns, but this option does not give you the choice of neighborhood of the other programs.
It can be hard to find good sources of information if you are feeling overwhelmed, but PA Housing Search has gathered together a number of web links to resources focused on Public Housing in PA. The PA Department of Human Services Housing Services is not included at PA Housing Search, but is an important source for State specific housing support information.
